Howdy,

I work in a small boutique office with another architect and two urban designers in the centre of Wellington. I am a sole practitioner which means that I work on all of the projects from beginning to end.

I tend to work very closely with my clients to design something that works for them on all levels, bring to their projects my own design methods, ideas, aesthetics and influences, as well as working in with those of my clients, the house or site, and the wider surrounds.

When I first graduated I worked for Dave Launder for 3 years before heading over to Glasgow for 3 years.
After I came back I worked briefly for John daish and went on to teach 4th year design at the School of Architecture for 7 years, I went back into private practice in 2007.

I have worked on a wide range of projects from new houses, to the restoration of a Grade A listed historic building in Scotland, to public housing and now mainly work on residential projects here in Wellington and in Hawkes Bay.

While most of the influences I am inspired by are modernist, Scandinavian and Japanese I also like working with the proportions and simple planning and detailing of Victorian villas and cottages and the modernist houses of the 1960’s and 70’s.

It is important to me that architecture is not just about how a house looks but also how it functions, how comfortable it is to live and work in, that there are places to sit, to eat, to curl up in the sun, and that a house is most of all a home.

As the great designer Eva Zeisel wrote: “To make something different is not great art. But to give pleasure, that is design”.

Alterations to the rear of a 1920’s bungalow to open the house out to stunning views while keeping the detailing of the bungalow. The colour scheme for this house was done by the late, great Erica Martin.

Mount Victoria working-men’s cottage

Mount Victoria working-men’s cottage

The Victorian cottage was given back its dignity with a rebuild of the south wall including new sash windows and front door and a full width verandah. A modern Lawson’s Cypress clad wing was added with a dark gallery space leading into a light filled bedroom. The cottage and the wing wrap 2 sides of our beautiful sheltered peaceful green and white courtyard- designed by Nicole Thompson.
